The Overseas Highway runs roughly 113 miles from the Florida mainland to Key West, hopping island to island across a chain of bridges over turquoise water. It is one of the most scenic drives in the country, and the journey is very much the point.

Understanding Mile Markers

Addresses in the Keys are given by mile marker (MM), counting down from around MM 113 near Florida City to MM 0 in Key West. Locals navigate entirely by these numbers, and so will you.

Key Largo (MM 106–90)

The first major island is the self-proclaimed “Diving Capital of the World.” John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park protects part of the only living coral barrier reef in the continental United States; glass-bottom boat tours and snorkeling trips head out from here.

Islamorada (MM 90–72)

Known as the “Sportfishing Capital,” Islamorada is a string of islands with a laid-back, upscale feel. Stop at a roadside fish market, feed the giant tarpon at Robbie’s, and watch the sunset over the Gulf side.

Marathon and the Seven Mile Bridge (MM 60–47)

Marathon is a good midpoint stop, home to the Turtle Hospital and Sombrero Beach. Just south, the Seven Mile Bridge is the highlight of the drive — a long, low span over open water, with the historic old bridge running alongside it.

Big Pine Key and the Lower Keys (MM 47–9)

Slow down here, literally: Big Pine Key is home to the tiny, endangered Key deer, and reduced speed limits protect them. Bahia Honda State Park has what many consider the best beach in the Keys.

Key West (MM 0)

The road ends at Key West, a colorful, historic island town closer to Cuba than to Miami. Visit the Hemingway Home, watch the sunset celebration at Mallory Square, and walk the lanes of old conch houses. It is the southernmost point in the continental U.S.

  • Allow more time than the map suggests — traffic and stops add up.
  • Book accommodation ahead, especially in winter high season.
  • Protect the reef — use reef-safe sunscreen.
  • Watch the weather in late summer and fall, the peak of hurricane season.
